The Allied invasion of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944—Operation Overlord—is a familiar historical date known as D-Day. Operation Dragoon, the invasion of Southern France, between Toulon and Cannes, is less well known.

The invasion of Southern France began on August 15, 1944, midway between Toulon and Cannes on the seacoast of Frejus and Cavalaire-sur-Mer. This operation was a prelude to the liberation not only of France, but of all Europe. Operation Dragoon forces advanced rapidly northward into the Rhône Valley where they joined forces with Operation Overlord. Working in concert, both invasions contributed to the Allied victory over Germany during World War II.

Operatives from the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), American Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—such as Alexandra Cockrell, and Allied military officers detailed to the Special Security Command (SSC)—like Lt. Jason Norris, worked with the Resistance members such as Michelle Devray in the occupied countries to ensure the success of these operations. A Basque guide, known only as Jacques, led Cockrell and Norris to safety over the Pyrénées. The Allied lives, as well as those of the Resistance members and their Basque guides, were in danger throughout these vital missions. This is their story.

Attention Avid Fans of World War II Are you looking for an unforgettable story
about an exceptional heroine during a time in which society is focusing
on superheroes? Well, your search is over! Alexandra's Secret, by Annie Laura
Smith, is a spellbinding account of the daring adventures and experiences of a brave
young American girl, Alexandra Cockrell, who is an agent for the
Office of Strategic Services during World War II. As the story unravels, she is
eventually joined by other patriots who formed a secret network throughout
European countries in the face of grave danger during the ugliness of war.
So inspiring!
This reader was also impressed by the skillful and accurate manner in
which the author presented historical times/actual events and people--a
testimony to the many hours she spent on research. On a personal note
Although I worked for the military (Navy, Air Force) within the confines of four walls
for over 30 years,I was privileged and honored to meet real-life heroes/heroines of
World War II (and other wars). I was always awed by the willingness of these men and
women to sacrifice their lives for freedom and for country. This fictional story illustrates
these same attributes. I ask the question Could I have done the same?

Annie Laura Smith, author of other novels set in the time of World War II and a student of World War II, has written a page turner. Suspense begins to build from chapter to chapter as Smith skillfully weaves this "cat and mouse" story of the role of the OSS in the dangerous shadowlands of World War II. The characters are mainly young and attractive, patriotic and brave. Smith convinceingly displays the real dangers of their "occupations." Young people as well as adults should read this book. Some people think that fiction about World War II is no longer relevant. How misguided they are! Today there are many people who still function in these shadowlands guarding the freedoms we proclaim that we hold so dear. This is an instructive book as to the role of dictators and how persons who value freedom must be ever on guard. The characters in Smith's book honor the memory of all those during World War II and before and since who have walked treacherous trails and frequented shadowy places to be sure that freedom and justice prevail.

This book would make an excellent movie. It has suspense, action, interesting characters, both good and evil, and covers considerable geographical space with what would be dramatic scenery. It would have appeal to idealistic young people looking for a way to make a real contribution to world security and peace. Buy it, read it, and think about what a different world we would live in had not Alexandra, and others like her, successfully guarded secrets.
ALEXANDRA'S SECRET is an exciting read that plunges the reader headfirst into a world that will be alien to most modern readers, and makes it fun, real and exciting. Eighteen-year-old Alexandra Cockrell is dropped into World War II France on a critical mission shortly before D-Day, and has to struggle every minute to stay alive and fight a monstrous evil in an assignment that should be beyond her years. Engaging, feisty and clever, Alexandra pulls the reader into the details of occupied France, the French Resistance and the terror of Nazi domination. The details are dead-on and presented in a story that cannot be put down.

What's remarkable about the book is it's emotional and historical realism. It's hard to realize that there was a time in the not-so-distant past when ordinary teen-agers like Alexandra were the only thing protecting the world from a darkness greater than that in the Harry Potter or Star Wars movies. Ms. Smith's book shows us what it felt like to be there.

As good as this book is for any reader, I think this book presents a special opportunity for people who lived through World War II to give a copy to grandchildren and say, "This is a little piece of what things were like."
From the very first page of Alexandra's Secret, Annie Laura Smith plunges the reader into the murky and dangerous world of the Intelligence Operations during World War II. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) drops Agent Alexandra Cockrell behind enemy lines on dangerous and vital mission. The fate of the largest invasion force in history hangs in a balance and eighteen-year-old Alexandra must prevail against impossible odds. Alexandra's Secret is fast passed and extremely accurate historical fiction that you won't be able to put it down."

Flying Boats & Spies China Clipper, a Nick Grant Adventure The Legacy of Bletchley Park Whispers in the Wind
Ordinary people in extraordinary situations - that is what makes a great story. Alexandra's Secret is one of those stories. Although this is historical fiction, it reads like an account of an actual event. Alexandra is 18 year-old Belgian American. She knows the languages and customs of many of the countries occupied by the Germans and volunteers her skills to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The story follows her through intense training before she is parachuted into Belgium to find an American officer who was shot down while carrying the plans for the Allied invasion of Southern France. Her mission to locate those plans and ensure they do not fall into enemy hands. What follows is a fast-moving tale filled with intrigue, deception and danger that rockets across Belgium, France, Spain and the Mediterranean Sea.
